The International Women's Dayis celebrated on everyMarch 8to observe women's success and part in cultural, political, social and economic development. It is also acknowledged to make people aware of women's rights and gender equality.
In the year 1909, the Socialist Party of America celebrated thisdaywhen around 15,000womencame along and protested low pay, long work hours and lack of voting rights in New York. It was in the year 1911 when Russia started celebrating thedayon 8thMarch.
The idea to make thedayinternational came from awomancalled Clara Zetkin. She suggested the idea in 1910 at an International Conference of WorkingWomenin Copenhagen. There were 100womenthere, from 17 countries, and they agreed on her suggestion unanimously.

To honor the contributions of Sarojini Naidu, February 13 is observed as NationalWomen's Day of India. This year is the 142nd birth anniversary of Sarojini Naidu. Sarojini Naidu was not only a freedom fighter, but she also became the firstwomangovernor of the United Provinces, the present Uttar Pradesh
The United Nations began celebrating International Women's Day in the International Women's Year, 1975. In 1977, the United Nations General Assembly invited member states to proclaimMarch 8as the UN Day for women's rights and world peace.
